Description | The Danube River Basin (DRB) faces major challenges related to river sediments. The 2021 update of the Danube River Basin Management Plan introduced sediment balance alteration as a new issue under “Hydromorphological alterations.” Industrial, agricultural, and urban sectors also require sediment quality assessments across the DRB, but the lack of standardized monitoring limits risk understanding.
The iNNO SED project seeks to address this by establishing the Danube Sediment ‘Lighthouse’ Knowledge Centre. The Centre will develop innovative methods for sediment monitoring and management, improve sediment quality and continuity, demonstrate innovative solutions, and transfer knowledge to other regions. It will collaborate with stakeholders and build on previous initiatives, setting an example for sediment management in other large river basins, contributing to the EU’s competitiveness. |
